" Your Intellect is your in house Guru "

(discrimination) Part -11

The intellect is a built in guru that keeps driving you through the thick and thin of your life. Not your father, not your mother, not even your school teacher, has guided as much your own intellect had driven you so far, till where you are now. Today if you are positioned in the best possible manner and if you feel like a winner, then the credit must to go to your intellect. On the other hand, if you feel you have landed up in a big mess, then also your intellect stands as the reason for such a mess.

Disciple : You mean the inner guru is the actual guru ?
Master : Yes, it is !
Disciple : What about you ? I see you as my master and a guru ?
Master : But even your master is chosen by your intellect only !
Disciple : Oh ! I thought the Guru only selects the disciple !
Master : That's just one more erroneous thinking !

The guru never selects a disciple, a contradiction to the common belief. But the disciple using his intellect, discriminates the pros and cons and picks a guru who is suitable to his temperament. The seeker usually is on the look out for the guru who can fulfill his spiritual needs. When he comes across a guru, who seem to deliver what is needed by the seeker, using his judgmental abilities, the seeker may want to accept or reject someone as a guru.

Disciple : All the gurus are selected by
disciples on these parameters only?
Master : Yes always. There are no exceptions to it !
Disciple : Why is it like that ?
Master : Because the seeker is looking for a perfect guru who
would fit in perfectly to the frame he has built of a guru with
his own limited understanding of spirituality !
Disciple : Does it not apply to the guru too ?

Does the guru expect a perfect disciple?
Master : The guru does not usually except a perfect disciple !
When the disciple arrives he is always imperfect. In fact the
disciple needs a guru only to perfect himself, though there is

nothing called as perfection exists anywhere !
Disciple : So how does the seeker use
his intellect to select the guru ?
Master : He uses his informations he had
gathered earlier about how a guru should
be and then select a guru based on that !
Disciple : Give me examples of the parameters
used by the seeker to select a guru ?
Master : The guru should have long flowing hair,
saffron or some particular robes, always sitting in
meditation with eyes closed, who is much holier
than the rest, will never say no even if he has to say no,
full of compassion and holding some rosaries in the hand,
who can read minds and can heal all illnesses and
can bring good fortunes, can make the children at
home study, get the daughters to marry and sons to go to work
can help the business to prosper, advice on investments,

buying properties, buying vehicles,
available on phone round the clock, who is powerful, can take care
of the disciple for the next seven lives, can remove
the sins of all the past seven lives and much more !
Disciple : Surprising ! these are the parameters their
intellects use to discriminate between a guru and non guru ?
Master : Almost always, yes !
Disciple : No one would want to come to a guru to know the Self ?
Master : Yes ! there are a very few rare exceptions !
Disciple : Where are they ?
Master : In front of me, you !

The relationship between a guru and a disciple is usually a weird one. Because it is not always the disciple comes to seek the truth, but most of the times only to fill up the voids in his life by someone 'holy' by which he can find fulfillment in life. The guru may play to the tunes of a disciple at the start, in order to convince the disciple first and then shift his focus to the truth, but still only a few would graduate to seeking the truth. In most cases the disciple comes with a pre educated mind on spirituality and would want his guru to approve all the he knew.

Disciple : So who is the most important guru ?
Master : The inner guru only !
Disciple : So why do we need a external guru ?
Master : To know that there is an in house guru and
to give a shape to that in house guru with the help of the
external guru and get liberated from

all forms of support from outside !
Disciple : Is that what freedom is all about ?
Master : Almost freedom. There are just a few more
things to do than just get the intellect ready !
Disciple : Is this the only purpose one should have guru externally?
Master : Yes to find your own inner guru
who can guide you for the rest of your life !
Disciple : What to do with the external guru
after having found the inner guru?
Master : Let him continue with what he does,

if you can help him in his work, you will continue
to associate with him or else you will spare him with a
sense of gratitude and reverence as you move ahead on your own !

" Same intellect, when applied externally
it is discrimination and when applied
internally it is contemplation "


Discrimination is used to divide a situation in to two and pick the best suitable of the two and fit yourself in it. On the other hand, contemplation will pick a situation and enable you to see what is the link between both. The common unifying factor. Both are intellectual acitivities but discirmination leans out externally and contemplation is inclined inwardly.

Disciple : So choosing between the negative and
positive thoughts also is inward contemplation,
because its happening within?
Master : Never. Inward here is not inwards
from your body but inwards from intellect.
Even the mind, breath and body are outsiders only !
Disciple : OK. so the real inward starts only from intellect?
Master : Yes ! Everything else belong to the outside only !
Disciple : Please tell the sequence of
my faculties in the order it is now ?
Master : The most external is physical body with hands,
legs and head, etc. The next faculty is breath, then comes
mind with all the thoughts parading everywhere.
Next to the mind is Intellect. Close on the heels
of Intellect comes the unchartered territory
of Consciousness.

Your personality is simply packed in these five layers.
1. Body to perform actions
2, Breath to keep the body alive
3, Mind to experience the good and bad experiences
4, Intellect to guide and direct the mind and breath and body
5, Blissful entity without definite boundaries

Disciple : The fifth layer called bliss does not have a boundary ?
Master : Yes. It has a clear boundary with the intellect
but does not have a clear boundary on the other side !
Disciple ; Whats on the other side ?
Master : The Consciousness or Godliness !

The bodily actions need the guidance of the Intellect. What you want to see, hear, smell, taste and touch are all controlled by your intellect. The results of such seeing, smelling etc are experienced by the mind as happiness and sorrow. The intellect is a knowledge hub which disseminate instructions non stop.

The popular Indian spiritual literary work called Bhagavad Gita has likened the chariot as the human body and the five horses as the five senses and Arjuna (the deluded warrior) as the mind and Sri krishna (the Guru) as the supreme intellect holding the reins of the horse senses and giving guidance to the deluded mind in the form of discrimination. The backdrop of the story set in a battle field is compared to life in general and all the soldiers of both sides as the positive and negative thougths confronting each other like a war.

Disciple : I thought Krishna is a God.
But you say he is just intellect ?
Master : He represent the finest
intellect which was deeply rooted in
the consciousness. In his days, he
was only a King who became a Guru.
Later days now, after many thousand
years, Krishna is considered as God.
Just like Buddha or Jesus who lived as
plain human beings with very fine
intellects totally established in Consciousness
eventually became god like personalities.

Any one who gate crashed at the threshold of Consciousness from the intellect is Godlike. Not that he will start ruling the world, but he is now deeply connected to the Consciousness. Krishna did it and also showed the way to Arjuna. Time and time again there have been men of such finest intellects have appeared on earth and propounded Truth in so many ways.

Disciple : Does anyone break the barrier of the
intellect become as popular as Krishna ?
Master : Need not be. There may be
many awakened ones who
are not recognized even by their own
neighbors and kith and kin !
Disciple : Does not popularity come
naturally to the enlightened ones?
Master : If popularity is the benchmark then
even a Hollywood actor can be enlightened !

"The intellect can discriminate everything
except One thing. You can tell reaching that
One thing within you, which your intellect
cannot discriminate is called enightenment "

Part - 9

Discrimination always needs polarities. It needs opposite entities to keep it functioning. The only need for the intellect in you is that you have to constantly discriminate between the opposites. You have to make quick decisions and arrive quickly to decisive actions all the time. The life around you springs a spectrum of circumstances which can throw a potent challenge to the intellect to discriminate, decide and then also execute the decisions.

Disciple : I figure now that intellect can
function only when there is a polarity ?
Master : Exactly ! Where there is no polarity,
there is no need for Intellect !
Disciple : Which means everyone is
using their intellect all the time ?
Master : Yes all the time !
Disciple : Give me some examples ?
Master : As I explained earlier, every moment
your intellect is put to use. If you wanted
to turn on the ceiling fan, the intellect
immediately jumps to discriminate, whether
the atmoshpere is hot or cool, then accordingly
it decides, if it is hot then it says "yes, turn
on the fan". Then your body just listen to it by getting
up to the switch and turn it on. Intellect by itself
cannot turn the fan on, but can only drive the hand
in your body to do it !
Disciple : That's interesting to know !
Master : Yes even after reaching the knob,
it is only the intellect which discriminates
how much speed now is exactly required to run the fan.

Every step you take to walk, to sit, to get up, to lie down, to sleep, to wake up, to eat, to play, to drive, to meet, to talk, to watch TV, the right channel to watch, right food to eat, right magazine to read, right time to relax, just about everything you do is clearly discriminated and decided by your intellect.

Disciple : So my intellect is always
making the right decision ?
Master : Yes, but only according to you !
Others need not think so !
Disciple : Sometimes I feel my own
decisions are not right ?
Master : Yes. it is because the
intellect is not shaped well, is weak !
Disciple : Some people refuse to change
their decisions also ?
Master : Yes, because their intellects
are very strong and unwilling to adapt to others !
Disciple : Such people can be called as head strong?
Master : Precisely ! In other words a strong ego.
Disciple : I wish to know the different types
intellects possible among human beings !
Master : Here we go !

A subtle Intellect - Can be fluid like. So subtle in its quality that it can see simultaneously the both ends to a situation and can also identify the connecting undercurrent between the opposites. This intellect makes the fastest progress on the spiritual path. Because of its subtlety it has no hangups about being adaptable but with total clarity. It makes decisions almost always what is ideal in that situation and does not have its own preferences. Sometimes can be mistaken as irresponsible and careless due the obvious lacking of passion, in its discriminations and decisions. A sharp Intellect - Can see through a situation quickly and clearly, discriminate quickly and decide in a jiffy. It also can adapt to changes in a jiffy. Not obsessed with what it had decided earlier but ready to change, without being confused. Logical to the core and can analyze just about anything. Quick at grasping and understanding others. People with such intellects influence this world economically, socially, politically and spiritually.

A dull Intellect - Cannot study a situation, fail to discriminate the right thing suitable to most people, afraid to make decisions, always looking support from others to decide. When you pose a question, they just stare blank. Such intellects function like a refugee whose life is at the mercy of others. You will spot them everywhere. By sheer number of years they worked they would reach higher positions, but will always be a spanner in the wheels of growth.

A strong Intellect - Can make decisions apparently right to one's own self. Need not benefit others. Cannot change decisions and remain stubborn and adamant. This type of intellect mostly is a stumbling block in creating harmony around. Its unwillingness to change also is an indication of fear and insecurity. Most administrative people get into this mode of intellect. They reckon this to be the only way to manage the changing times.

A confused Intellect - Cannot decide anything in life. Always the both sides appear right and wrong too. The hamlet's intellect is of this kind. To be or not to be is always the question. The discrimination of this intellect can go for a toss every time it ends up in a cross roads situation. It does not fail to blame others for its confusion when it failed to make a decision. Every time you bump into someone who is blaming the world for his sufferings has this type of intellect.

A crooked intellect - Always want to do decide what is right for oneself and wrong for others. Full of revenge and retaliation, it functions in a cheeky manner and create as much confusion around and derive a cheap pleasure in it. They also justify their crookedness with the help of the same intellect. Everyone at some point or the other cross or remain this stage. Potentially troublesome but nevertheless a bright one. If willing to change, it can rise above the rest in a swift manner.

Disciple : So every one is born with such
classifications of intellects?
Master : Need not be ! Situations and
circumstances change the way their intellects function !
Disciple : So how my intellect function today
need not be the same tomorrow ?
Master : Precisely, a school dropout can become
world famous and the richest man and a most
scholarly Nobel laureate can end up in
doldrums and sufferings when he died !

"Intellect is the last step and perhaps the
most difficult step towards enlightenment "

Part - 8

Intellect can discriminate everything else except itself. It cleaves through unseen subtleties of life. But strangely intellect does not have the clarity to discriminate itself very easily. Because it is always placed at such a high pedestal, so close to the Consciousness, that it sometimes assumes itself to be the ultimate. Like a secretary who is working closely with the boss wants to behave like a boss himself to others. When the real boss reminded the secretary one day, who is the boss and that secretary should be out, then the secretary feels like walking on the broken glass pieces.

To discriminate the intellect by the intellect itself is somewhat like committing a harakiri (Japanese style suicide). Because the intellect lived in a dream world of the unquestionable authority for so long and on a day when it had to discriminate itself and find out that it is just one more faculty like mind and body, it starts to behave like a donkey. Many times such people are seen, who supposed to have been on the path, behaving like an ass, when they are told to shut up and just remain with oneself.

Disciple : So the intellect can never
budge a bit because of its own destruction?
Master : Somewhat like that ! The fear of being
wiped out makes the intellect to behave like that !
Disciple : Is that reason you said that intellectual
people are more qualified to know the Truth but
they are the ones who refuse to see the Truth ?
Master : Somewhat like that, yes !
Disciple : Whats the correction here?
Master : Its not the intellectual person refuse
to see the Truth, but he thinks that what he
thinks alone is Truth and there is nothing beyond !

The Intellect assumes this unwarranted power it had entrusted itself. This is a great barrier for a seeker on the seat of meditation. Because the intellect is continuously discriminating everything, from the small sounds heard to the wild or sacred imaginations running on the mind. It helps the mind to steer past the obstacles and achieve a peace of mind, the calmness, silent and serenity. People who conclude that meditation is to serve just the purpose of a peace of mind always miss the point that there is a lot more to meditation than just finding some relief and a stress free mind.

Disciple : So meditation is not just meant for peace of mind?
Master : Far from it, meditation begins with peace of mind !
Disciple : That's news to me. So where does it end ?
Master : It may not end but it would
become inherent aspect of your life !
Disciple : Please explain !
Master : It begins as meditation and
as if end as meditativeness !
Disciple : What begins as just an activity
slowly mature in to lifestyle ?
Master : How so true !

But the fact still remains is that intellect is capable bringing peace of mind, release stress, make you feel relaxed etc, but certainly does not give you the ultimate spiritual alchemy. Because it has the capability of sorting out mind's problems, difficulties, confusions etc. It can apparently bring confidence, positive thinking, self esteem, self belief etc. Most people want to settle just with these as a great treasure unearthed.

Disciple : Is anything more to the meditation than all these ?
Master : Certainly ! A lot more !
Disciple : Oh no ! I seem to be already wary
of the journey and still more ?
Master : Actually its just one step more and that's
the final step and that would make all the difference !
Disciple : Just one step more ? Whats that step ?
Master : The final step is the step beyond the intellect.
Beyond that you are free and liberated forever !

" Beyond a point the discrimination has no purpose
when applied within, but the same discrimination
has endless purpose to apply in the world outside "

(discrimination) Part - 7

The intellect needs to discriminate only to some distance when you explore within your self. It may have to identify the mind, the various thoughts, emotions and feelings and their impermanent nature and eventually arriving at consciousness. But once it touched consciousness with its discrimination, the intellect has to wind up its operations inside. There is no further need for it to be active.

Disciple : Does it mean that the intellect has a limitation ?
Master : True. It has a definite boundary,
but certainly the intellect has free access
to almost anywhere unlike the body and breath.
Disciple : What does that mean ?
Master : Even the body and breath are
influenced by the discriminating intellect !
Disciple : How is that ?
Master : Even if your body has to sit,
only your intellect has to decide about it.
Body by itself cannot decide it !
Disciple : I got it.

Why intellectual people usually tend to contribute more to the external world and seem to be sometimes obstructed to their own inner world is only because of the vast scope the intellect has to perform externally. The discrimination happens both externally and then internally too. Every intellect is so unique that there are always different views and opinions among humans about a same issue in the world.

Disciple : How come the intellects of
various people function differently ?
Master : The methodology of functioning is
the same but the parameters they use are different !
Disciple : I think I understand a bit but please explain ?
Master : Every intellect learns to discriminate in a
particular way as it grows up !
Disciple : OK ! Give me an example ?
Master : An Indian intellect would not mind leaving food
in his plate when he is through, while a Chinese intellect
would not allow even a particle of rice left in the plate !
A Japanese like to make as much noise possible while he ate
to show appreciation for the food while an European would
like to show it quietly !

The various traditions and cultures are shaped by the intellects of people lived in those eras. Many times the cultural aspects keep changing in a particular society or even in a community as new influential intellectuals appear. The lifestyles of different cultures were decided by some of the finest intellects of those times. The way one ate, slept, lived socially and spiritually were all intellectual influences.

Disciple : So the intellect is active in the world even
after its exploration of the inner Self ?
Master : Precisely ! You said it !
Disciple : It is not that the intellect will
disappear or vanish after enlightenment ?
Master : That's a ridiculous thinking !
Disciple : I have been taught that way that the
mind will disappear as a result of enlightenment !
Master : If so, then their body should also vanish
along with it ! Did they tell you that ?
Disciple : Not really, I was told that one will be busy
after enlightenment, in improving others lives !
Master : Only childish people concoct such stories !
Disciple : So the enlightened people need not educate others?
Master : Not all enlightened people should do the same thing.
Some may choose to live away from the din and roar of a city,
in some nameless village, in jungles, some may choose to do
work for a living and some can go around the world to educate
others on enlightenment. There are no standard ways to the
expressions of enlightened people.

The enlightenment does not make one automatically qualified to go around the world to educate others, unlike the trained teachers and instructors or the missionaries. Sometimes, even in silence one may be imparting the teachings, quietly from a place totally unknown to the whole world. But still the intellect would be active as much as their body and breath and mind.

Disciple : Let me clarify one more time, what is
mind and what is intellect? How they are different
from each other? I know you had explained earlier
but i need to understand it still !
Master : Essentially they are one and the same.
But for functional purposes they can be different.
Mind suggests and Intellect decides. Mind can be
confused but intellect brings clarity.
When you are confused about which shirt to buy
you are functioning from mind and when you decided
which one to buy, you are functioning from intellect.
when you get angry or feeling love, its from mind but
when you decide how much to love and where to stop
then its your intellect
at work !

" Viveka is like a torchlight inside a deep jungle.
It can help you either reach outside the jungle
or keep you moving to still deeper jungle "

(discrimination) Part -6

When your discrimination is sharper in the world, you forge ahead knocking down every block on the road, almost unstoppable. Making right moves at the right time. Cutting throats when necessary and stabbing from back with a smile on the face, just to win the rat race, are all possible, when your intellect is sharp like a sword and your ambitions are tall as mountains. Such Intellects are single pointed and never want to look inward for some soul searching.

But a dull intellect is always a source of pain. People with not so sharp viveka find this world something big to bite than what they can actually chew. They quit their active life in the world like dropping the hot potatoes, because their intellect is incompatible to meet the rigours of their daily lives, with the fear of failure looming large and an eternal sword of shame and humiliation hanging atop their heads, they succumb to the wilderness of the world.

Strangely sometimes, even a dull intellect in the world can shine like a cut diamond under fire, when exposed to discrimination of the inner Self. It make faster strides within than in the world outside at times, but almost as if with a vow, not to look back at this world again. Its a one way ticket. They progress in to the recesses of silence that filled the inner self. Such an intellect may miss out the vibrant world pulsating with life outside.

Despite the inner exploration of a intellect which was dull in the world outside, just the searching of the Self makes such a dull intellect really sharp. Even people with freshly sharpened intellect can actually make a meaningful life in the world, if they choose to come back to face life.

Disciple : Shall I clear a few doubts now !
Master : Yes indeed !
Disciple : Did you say that a dull intellect can get sharp?
Master : Yes ! precisely !
Disciple : How does that happen ?
Master : When it searched within the inner Self !
Disciple : Does this apply to all the intellects?
Master : Need not be. Some are sharp in the world already !
Disciple : Then to whom it applies ?
Master : Who else but you !
Disciple : But how does that happen ?
Master : Like a gentle breeze !

The inner search always sharpen your faculties. A discriminative mind used for spiritual contemplations is more potent than a blunt strategic mind of the world. The inner search makes not only your intellect sharper, but even other faculties like seeing and hearing and tasting, etc. Because when your discrimination began on your inner self, your mind along with intellect move towards this present moment. Anything that get exposed to the present moment will actually get sharpened.

Disciple : That's very encouraging to hear !
Master : But you cant stop
there just feeling encouraged !
Disciple : Yes I need to put it into action !
Master : From when?
Disciple : From the New Year onwards is OK ?
Master : Actually the day you apply it, is the only
New Year for you. The other days are all just a hogwash !

The sharpening of viveka is not exactly like sharpening a knife. But its more like melting the ice cube. A thick and dense intellect start to melt and become subtle. The sharpness is used here only to show that the discrimination is used for dividing the True from false. Perhaps you need a sharp knife like intellect to separate the almost inseparable Truth and false.

Disciple : But what do I do with
the falsehood once I found the truth ?
Master : You can put an advt in
the EBay and sell it off !
Disciple : You are kidding !
Master : Yes. Because the
false never existed ! So you cant
do anything with it !

The existence of 'false' or the 'unreal' is very questionable. Because they don't have a stand of their own, like your shadow which follows wherever you go but does not have an existence.

Disciple : How is that ? give me an example ?
Master : Suppose when you walk down alone
in the dead of night and see a ghost standing
on the road for a moment, what would you do ?
Disciple : Will chant all the mantras i know !
Master : OK and then what you will do ?
Disciple : I will sing some sacred songs loudly !
Master : OK ! and then ?
Disciple : I may call the gods for help !
Master : and then ?
Disciple : Will do some breathing exercises !
Master : what for ?
Disciple : So that I can run faster !
Master : Oh good. Suppose you go close to
the ghost and have a good look at it and
realize that it is not a ghost but just
a lamp post, then what will you do ?
Disciple : I feel how stupid i was !
Master : At first sight ghost was
real and post was false ?
Disciple : True, still I'm panting in fact !
Master : Now post is real and ghost is false ?
Disciple : yes !
Master : Where did the false go ?
Disciple : It was never
there, I just imagined !
Master : So what would you
do with that imagination ?
Disciple : Dump it on the
way home, in the trash can !
Master : Very well said !

The false does not have an existence, but just a figment of your imagination only. The truth is just covered beneath by its own light. Like the hot noon sun on a summer day. You cannot look at the sun in the middle of noon, because of the light that is shimmering down at you. Light belong to noon time sun, but it covers the view of the noon time sun. The shadow of the post made you imagine the ghost, the ghost apparently was hiding the post, but when you gathered yourself, the apparition had gone and what remains is just the plain Truth.

" Discriminating is what makes you someone more
special than rest of the species, at times even makes
you think more special than rest of mankind too "

(discrimination) Part - 5

Your attitude is usually concocted inside the closed doors of your intellect. Discrimination is the main tool used for such a concoction. This also is the beginning of the ego, the sense of I. When the mind shaped with this idea of I and then identify with the more concrete body, the making of ego a is complete. The same discrimination used to build the ego now has to reverse its process. But strangely when you built the ego, you were not aware of it, but when you want to deconstruct it, you have to do it with awareness.

Disciple : So you mean the intellect is the culprit?
Master : Haha, it comes so easy to blame
though you enjoyed all its services?
Disciple : So how do I understand the Intellect to be?
Master : Like a key inside the lock. You turn this
way it closes, turn that way it opens. Your choice !

Viveka when worked in the world, it gives strength and stability to your ego(intellect) to think of itself as independent. But same viveka when used in your spiritual pursuits, it would start to make your ego realize its dependency on something more deeper. Discrimination works your way out to the world and also to your inner Self.

Less evolved people come to believe that intellect should be used for only the purpose of art and science and other matters related to world. They excel in various forms of theater, dramatics, literary, music and story telling. The discrimination applied in the world has caused great inventions and explorations.

The modern science is a colossal single testimony to the discriminating intellects of humanity. The finest of intellects are sophisticated and highly insightful. They plan town and cities, the parks and roads. They had the courage to accept the metamorphosis of human life and paved way to the smoother evolution, civilization after civilization.

The same time there are a few other men who are busy exploring something utterly unprecedented. They used the same discriminative ability of the intellect to uncover their inner Self. While intellectual people used the key to open the possibilities of the world, the spiritual people made headway into the abysmal depths of consciousness.

Disciple : Everything sounds so classic.
But I cant understand anything !
Master : Never mind. I just told what I have to !
Now its left to your intellect to make anything out of it !

The dangers of a dull intellect can be that it would help the mind imagine too many obnoxious things as real. When those obnoxious beliefs are strong, it would be difficult for the intellect to open the lock to inner Self. Despite the fact they seem to be busy seeking spiritual truths, they make no progress for years together.

Disciple : How can I sharpen my intellect and discrimination ?
Master : Quite easily ! Do not conclude that whatever you know
now is real and final. Leave some scope for further knowing, then
sit quietly without trying to do or think anything !
Disciple : Is that called as meditation ?
Master : Sometimes yes !

" The day when you located your intellect and
understood its style of operation, the same
day you can claim yourself to be truly spiritual "

(discrimination) Part - 4

Locating the intellect in you is some exercise and can be quite a huffing and puffing one. It is as difficult as your eyes trying to look at your own eyes. Eyes can see everything except themselves. Your ability to observe is the singular major qualification you require for meditation. You can observe everything quite easily because you have the intellect supporting you in the probe and observation of life outside. The intellect can even help you observe various sensations of your body and moods of your mind but when it arrives at the domain of intellect, the observation seem to be suddenly so weak and wants to break down.

Disciple : So we can call this as the final obstacle ?
Master : True. It can be called as the final frontier !
Disciple : That sounds scary !
Master : Precisely, that's why you never
want to venture beyond that !
Disciple : OK. If not scary, then what
should be my attitude at that time ?
Master : Not just that time but right from the
word go, you should be fearless but a sport !
Disciple : I figure that but somehow at some
stage there is this fear for the unknown !
Master : Fear because you go within as if you
are going to encounter the consciousness and
fight it out, but if you entered in meditation
within you, like a sports man you may not be afraid !
Disciple : That makes sense but seems
difficult ! but I must try !
Master : That's OK. But even with a sport
man's attitude, there can be a problem !
Disciple : Doodle doo, whats that problem ?
Master : As a sports man you would want to win the Truth
and not lost to it ! It would become a matter of winning or losing !

The right attitude is important when you start your pursuit of the Grand Truth. Just like the ramp models cat walking with an attitude, your mind with its intellect moves about with certain attitude even on the seat of meditation. It is easy to tell the attitude of a cat walking model in a spot light and so is the attitude of a seeker on the seat of meditation. Following are some of the attitudes spotted amongst seekers during meditation everywhere..

1. attitude of surrender - this attitude is widely appreciated and glorified, but can create trouble at certain early stage. Only a running thief will surrender to the cops. Surrender happens mostly when you are cornered and have not found an escape route.

2. attitude of submission - also a popular attitude recommended by many gurus. The only hassle in this attitude is that you tend to think the Consciousness is like a tyrant and cruel and you have submitted yourself because of your helplessness. In fact submission happens only where there is force.

3. attitude of worship - A worshipper can never become what he worships, because the worshipper is always full of his own ideas and is never bothered to know or understand what the object of worship really is all about ? A worshipper simply imposes his ideas on the consciousness and creates hurdles for himself. Most disciples who worship the guru fall into such imposing characters. They never heard what the guru was talking.

4. attitude of encounter - people who lived in such challenging situations in their lives have a great appeal for this attitude. They get pepped up with such terms as encounter, at war, intercept and capturing etc. This is where your intellect gets embroiled in a tug of war with itself while you are in meditation.

5. attitude of devotion - a much popular attitude but has obvious limitation, because the devotion is always an emotional etat des affairs. Anything emotional is mind oriented and devotion is much happier to its oblique maneuvers within the mind scape. Devotion can never survive the marathon seeking required for the Intellect and then further seeking the Consciousness.

6. attitude of fear - to fear the intellect as a powerful tool and then try to comprehend can be a plain stupid joke. The intellect or the consciousness cannot be comprehended with fear in mind. Because in fear you only look for ways to escape or hide and never meet or merge.

7. attitude of action or dynamism - a healthy attitude to make a living on earth but certainly carry a peanut value when it comes to tracing intellect and consciousness. Mostly action is related to body and its orientation and it would be a great disservice, if this attitude really promised anyone of the ultimate destination.

" You have an ego not because of your legs and hands but
because of this discriminating tool called intellect in you "

(discrimination) Part -3

It takes certain amount of ego to be on the spiritual path. The fact that you are seeking something, wanting to achieve something, plan to reach somewhere (where perhaps no one else reached) are all the strong indications of ego. I want to meditate, I want to get enlightened, I want to make others enlightened too, I want to make mankind happy, etc are simply statements packed with ego. But wait a minute, there is nothing wrong in being so, because unless you have an ego, there is no need to be spiritual or even the need to get enlightened. And there is no one in this world without ego.

Disciple : So what is Ego ?
Master : Your intellect is called as ego !

Disciple : Is it not the ego will be erased
during my spiritual pursuit ?
Master : Never. you ego will be intact. Just
it may undergo some transformation !
Disciple : So I'm not ego ? only my intellect is ego ?
Master : You are your intellect and

so your intellect is the ego !
Disciple : But I have heard that being

arrogant and pompous is ego ?
Master : Not at all. Even you try to be

humble and loving you are still an ego,
Perhaps you will have a humble ego !
Disciple : This is shocking statement !
Master : Truth shocks indeed, especially

to one who lives in a imaginary world !
Disciple : But you said I'm just my

intellect only ! How is that ?
Master : Because when i ask your name, your
body does not reply nor your breath knows your
name, but it is your intellect (a mode of mind)
which knows your name and keeps pushing

itself around in this world with that identity
to fish out some fame and glory !

The intellect is the actual seeker in you, driving you through various obstacles in the world of material success or on the path of spiritual pursuits daring, exploring, probing, questioning, analyzing are gradations of same discrimination spilling down to further subtleties. The intellect thrives on logic and questioning. It questions the existence with logic and explores from curiosity, analyze out of experiences !

Disciple : I did not realize that intellect is capable of all this !
Master : True, Intellect is the most misunderstood faculty we have !
Disciple : Why so ? Why it is misunderstood by everyone ?
Master : Because we could never locate the intellect easily as much we can locate the other parts like head and shoulders ! Since you dont
see something and only hear about, then there are more chances to misunderstand than actually understand !
Disciple : Why cant we locate intellect?
Master : Because its subtle and not so catchable by the senses !
Disciple : Only intellectual person can locate the intellect?
Master : May be you are right !
Sometimes they can !

But actually the intellectual person is always busy discriminating and dissecting that sometimes even he does not locate his own intellect. In vedic texts, the example of separating food grains from the husk after harvest is famous, to give an example that the intellect too discriminates and separates the falsehood from the real. Like the mystical bird hamsa(a kind of a swan that knows too much) which can separate milk from water and drink up all the milk and leave the water behind, the man of discrimination can see only truth and leave all the false matters behind.

Disciple : But I'm not sure what is this Truth ?
Master : Truth in spiritual terms is simply

anything which does not change in time !
Disciple : Is there really such a thing

which does not change in time ?
Master : Yes, that's what your

intellect has to find out !

The intellect is meant to discriminate between the permanence and impermanence and then identify with the permanent. When it identified with the permanent, then it suddenly seem to lose its own importance. That's where the intellect tends to get defensive. The intellect had all along considered itself as a independent entity and had placed itself supremely above all other faculties in your personality. But on the day it realized that there is a big daddy(consciousness) who is sitting quietly just beneath it and actually supporting its existence, the intellect can somewhat panic and protest and then throw all the tantrum. The intellect cannot accept someone higher than itself. The reason why the most intellectual person in your neighborhood would never visit a temple or a church but is always busy reading news and analyzing people is that he thinks he is above god and matters like that, but when he come to realize that there is really something more powerful existing than his limited intellect, he would be left with only two choices, either to accept and surrender to the unknown or reject and remain in ignorance of the unknown. Most of the times an intellectual person would opt for the latter.

“ When you have a sharp intellect, you can have this world sliced as wafers to find your share of success and happiness. When such an intellect applied on the spiritual path then you would end up with something that is far beyond your childlike dreams of success and happiness”

Part 2

Intellect is not a bodily part that can be seen like your hands and legs. But it is a built-in faculty of the mind. It opens up every time there is a need, like a convertible car that opens and closes its roof with the rain and sunshine. Mind is a multi purpose facility. Intellect alone can discriminate in you. If you running up and down the menu card in a crowded lunch time restaurant, your intellect should be quick enough to decide what you wanted and place an quick order. When your viveka or discrimination is poor, you most of the times cannot zero down on any decisive act. When mind is more powerful than the intellect then such a person is a emotional wreck. He also cannot discriminate or contemplate much. He just repsond according to his emotions.

Disciple : People generally say 'head and heart'.
What does that mean ?
Master : Head is intellect, heart is mind !
Disciple : Viveka happens to intellect only ?
Master : Rather viveka happens

through the intellect only !
Disciple : The viveka is required all the time ?
Master : Yes as long as you are alive !
Disciple : After enlightenment too ?
Master : If food is required after

enlightenment then intellect too !

When you shift the focal point of your intellect from worldly dealings to spiritual discriminations then you will find your intellect getting further sharper than before. While the worldly dealings can turn your intellect blunt, the spiritual pursuit will put the slicing sharpness back on the intellect. The Intellect as a discriminating faculty does not create anything. Its not even a creative faculty but it helps to understand the creation itself better.

The upanishads talk of the boat as a mind with the rudders as intellect and the ocean as the world. The boat itself cannot reach the destination. You may shout and cry loud but boat would move only in the direction of the wind. That's where the need for the rudders come handy. The rudders discriminate the current of the waters and and wind and focus on the direction the boat has to reach and eventually help the boat to reach the desired destination.

Disciple : Does the intellect always help one to reach the right destination ?
Master : Need not be ! Intellects can be faulty !
Disciple : So all intellects are not good ?
Master : They are neither bad, but just they
work the way they have been taught !
Disciple : I don't figure this one !
Please give an example ?
Master : Two men return home from work on
a cold winter day, one decided to reach home
early and drink a hot cup of coffee, another
decided to drop in at the nearby pub to
empty a big bottle of malt whisky.
Both decisions were made by intellects
of those men only. But their intellects
functioned only from data what they had fed in it !
Disciple : How is that ? Quite a puzzle !
Master : Like your computer, you cannot hope to see
James Bond movie after downloading a Indian Jones flick !

Intellects can terribly go wrong. Bad mistakes are always possible by them. Awful decisions are made by intellect many times. The discriminating of the intellect may be is intact with everyone but still the intellect can discriminate wrongly. Your intellect works with limited data provided by you from childhood. An intellect shaped by christian values will only accept bible as holy and intellect with Hindu inputs will consider Gita as the only holy book, so also a Muslim with a islamic values consider Quran as the most holiest of all. Infact they even dream of the gods from their respective religions only. A christian can never dream of a Shiva and Hindu hardly dreams of Jesus or Mary.

Disciple : So Viveka is not a fabulous thing as what I imagined?
Master : It is still fabulous only. Just how well it is used maters !
Disciple : So what does it discriminate usually ?
Master : While in the world, it usually discriminates
the situations and people socially, economically, racially etc
But when it turns to spirituality the point of discrimination changes !
Disciple : OK ! What is the topic for discrimination spiritually ?
Master : Simple, It just discriminates the Truth from the false !
Disciple : Please explain ?
Master : It tries to discriminate between
the permanence and impermanence !
Disciple : Oops, I still don't get it !
Master : It discriminates between the
Total from the fragmented parts !
Disciple : Im getting somewhere !

Master : The intellect gets busy with
finding out the real thing in this false
looking world in the form of discrmination !

" When you can tell a man in you,
even though you are drowned in the
world of a husband, then your
ability to discriminate is still intact "

(discrimination) Part -1

Its night time and obviously dark outside, you have to go out and then you look up the skies to find rain clouds hovering around. You then decide to take an umbrella with you. This is viveka or discriminative ability of the mind. You are using this ability in you to discriminate all the time. Right from the time you discriminate to wake up or to still remain in the bed like a bundle of used clothes, that should be sent to the laundry, you keep discriminating all through day, till finally when you discriminate whether its time to hit the sack or hang in there to watch that movie where vampires act better than the hero himself.

Disciple : You were talking on contemplations
all the time, now how do i connect both?
Master : You will use the discrimination to separate
both first and then use contemplations to connect both !
Disciple : Its a puzzle to me !
Master : Yes ! That's why spirituality is such
a fascinating thing around here since Adam and Eve, so enjoy

Discrimination is a much lesser stage compared to contemplation in the ladder of spiritual rungs. But without discrimination one cannot make it up to contemplations. Only a man with an intellect which is as sharp as a razor can slice the world so well into opportune moments of success and happiness. That's why such sharpened intellectual people are sometimes rare to find on the spiritual path, because they are busy slicing the world for power and status. When a seeker step into the arena of spirituality, it is easier to identify his weaknesses and strengths. If he had come equipped with a very sharp intellect then you can be assured that he will be soon out of the bounds of arena to tell the world that he is liberated. But if his intellect behaves like a butter knife and has come to the arena like a refugee, then you can be assured, he is a source of trouble to everyone around him and then to himself too.

Disciple : First of all, What is an intellect?
Master : That which is discriminating in you !
Disciple : Is it the mind?
Master : Not at all. It is called as intellect !
Disciple : Do I have the intellect?
Master : Everyone has an intellect in this world
of humans! Some may not want to use it often well,
but some use it more often than others !
Disciple : Where is it located ?
Master : It is just another functional mode of mind only !
Disciple : Please explain ?
Master : Mind suggests and spreads the options in front of intellect
then intellect picks up one and announces, this is it !
Disciple : How is that ?
Master : Its like buying your choice of necktie
from a stand full of them. You see all the neck ties,
the urge to see and want to buy is by the mind,
but it takes help from intellect to
decide on which tie to buy !
Disciple : What is one big difference
between mind and intellect ?
Master : Mind is indecisive and
intellect is decisive !
Disciple : I almost understood !
Master : Whenever you are indecisive
you are functioning from your mind at
that time. Whenever you are decisive
then you function at that time from
the intellect !
Disciple : I got it now !

Mind contains intellect too but functionally intellect is more superior to mind. Because while mind is always under the threat of getting carried away by the emotions, feelings and by the world in general, the intellect is unshakable and gives a anchor to the mind which is mostly slippery like the quick sands of canary islands. Whenever mind feels slippery it would grab intellect's hand for support.

Disciple : Give me some examples of this mind intellect interactions ?
Master : OK lets go back to the man who took a umbrella to drug store because he thought it was going to rain. When he stepped out he had doubt "will it rain ?". That's clearly his mind with a silly and slippery doubt. Then he hear himself saying, " yes it will rain" and that was the more stable intellect in him. Again the mind raises another doubt " Do I need a umbrella ? ". it literally asks the intellect, then the intellect of the man replied concretely " yes, you better take the umbrella. " All this can happen in a jiffy within you !
Disciple : It was very confusing to me earlier !
Master : Because your mind was working !
Disciple : Its clear now !
Master : Because your intellect is working now !

" Contemplation happens in the mind,
but the result of any contemplation is
always to go beyond the same mind "

(Man of steady contemplation) Part -4

The man of contemplation become steady, when he shifted his focus from outside objects for contemplation to his own self. All along he was keen to observe outside world of happenings and was contemplating like a tourist from a tropical country visiting a Siberian zoo and trying to identify the animals he saw inside the cages. He had spent enough time admiring the rainbow stuck in the skies like some cut paste image on computer, he realized it was false and did not have real existence, he has seen the moon rising and setting among the trees on those dream like nights of self created solitude. He has seen the world with a eye of scrutiny and suspicion which eventually matured as contemplation. The world exists but his interpretations of the world were dropped like frugal raindrops on a nameless ocean. The world does not matter to him anymore.

Disciple : Does it mean he does not
participate in the worldly events?
Master : Not that way ! He would still
be someone in this world. But the world
does not matter means, the interpretation
of the world about him have lost their
significance to him.
Disciple : How did he manage to drop
people's interpretations about him so easily ?
Master : By dropping his own interpretations
about them first !

The shifting of focus from outside objects to one's own self is the biggest leap in the process of contemplation. That would be making things a lot more swifter and easier for the contemplator. Because the oneself is the easiest available object for contemplations.

Disciple : How does one contemplate on self ?
Master : Starting with your body you can proceed
step by step to various layers of your personality
like breathing faculty and thinking faculty and the
discriminating faculty and blissful enitity etc.
Disciple : The purpose of contemplating of one self is ?
Master : To understand that you are just the expression of
this creation but you also contain a bit of the creator in you !
Disciple : This seem to be a more intriguing contamplation !
Master : Yes, but the mystery deepens as much as older doubts
get dissolved at every step you move ahead in the path of
contemplations !

The greatest revolution that can happen as a result of contemplations, to bunch of thoughts inside your head is, to drop totally all your translations about world and the various in it. You would have also stopped bothering about who said what about you, the other people's interpretations about you may not influence you. That is when you have surely steadied the contemplativeness somewhat convincingly authentic. This is actually lot more easier than Atlas holding the universe on his shoulders.

Most part of vedas(the Hindu scriptural text)were composed by such men of steady contemplation, except for the vedanta (end portions of vedas). They expressed the contemplative mind and its explorations of a Muni. The various portions dealing with various paths were devised by the men of such authentic and steady contemplation. Eevn you when get lost in contemplations, your creativity will start flowing and start to express then in what you do or speak or write. Seeing the world from the new found anchor called contemplation

Disciple : The contemplation and discrimination are same ?
Master : Discrimination separates and contemplation unites !
Disciple : Discrimination is part of contemplation?
Master : True ! Discrimination helps to contemplate !
Disciple : I wish to hear about discrimination from you !
Master : OK let us give it a try soon!

" To be a man of contemplation is not
trying to be good or bad or even holy and
unholy, it is about climbing beyond all of
them to see, if anything more to experience "

(man of steady contemplation) Part -3

Going beyond the good and bad is not going against the good and bad. If you trekked in a deep jungle ever, you would come across some rough spots with thorny bushes and anthills and you may also cross some breathtakingly beautiful spots with flowers and views. You cannot decide to settle down in the enchantment of a beautiful spot and forget the fact, that you have to get out of jungle, to reach your destination of safety and comfort. Life is a jungle and you will be always bumping in to good and the bad people and likewise situations all the time. To be a man of steady contemplation is not being ignorant of the good and bad, but exploring beyond them to reach your destination. The spiritual contemplations are always directed towards the meeting point of the dichotomy.

Disciple : Does it mean there is nothing
good and bad for the muni ?
Master : Not really ! He knows
what is good and bad ! But he also knows that
the good and bad is only a matter of convenience
to the people in this world !
Disciple : But if he went beyond
good and bad then he can be bad as well ?
Master : Perhaps in the eyes of
some people he can be bad too !
Disciple : Is it not bad for him ?
Master : Need not be. He understands
them as part of the deluded world and
keeps moving ahead in his contemplation.
He neither defends himself nor offends others !
Disciple : Does it mean he has become oblivious
to the good and bad things in life?
Master : He is still aware of them but
his focus is on something far beyond them !

One man's joy can be another's misery. Someone may find a particular religion very good, but when he decided to impose it on others, because everyone should enjoy what he found, it can perhaps cause severe damage to that chunk of humanity. Same applied to everything in life. Whatever you considered as good, need not be good to others and even to your own self. Because the parameters you used to judge something as good and bad can be highly inefficient and faulty. The Muni is the daredevil explorer who decided to break free from this usual goods and the bads of life and managed to peep into the empty space beyond.

Disciple : Upon peeping in to the space
beyond the good and bad or the all the
opposites in life, can someone return
to the world of polarities?
Master : It is never going away from polarities.
Even if you peeped in to the space beyond the
good and bad, still you contain the good and bad in you !
Disciple : Please explain ?
Master : You may have climbed the 25th floor of a skyscraper,
but still you contain the 2nd and the 3rd floor as you stand
on the 25th floor. The 25th floor is not independent of the lower floors.

On the spiritual path you would have gone any far, but you never can forget the norms of the world. One may choose to follow the norms and values of the world or dont follow them but cannot be ignorant of it. The man of steady contemplation is totally aware of the ways of the world. But when he knew the ways of the world to be just not real, he may choose to over throw them and walk free with empty hands. He does not care. He may not still follow a false way, just because everyone followed it. He would question at the very foundation upon which his life is built. If his life was built on false ideas of the world fed by people around, he would not hesitate to move away from that. But never he is ignorant of the ways of the world.

Disciple : Does contemplation lead
to change in the way one lives?
Master : Porbably yes !
Disciple : Give me an example ?
Master : You may consider a particular color
as inauspicious because others have been telling
you so. But upon contemplation you realize that
all colors are ok, its the stupid mind labels colors
as good and bad, then instantly you start to like

the color you were so singularly hating.
Disciple : So how does my life style change with this ?
Master : Your wardrobe suddenly will burst forth with
the same color you just stopped hating and started loving.
People will notice your choice of clothes have changed
their shades. You dont mind changing
the color of your pillow covers over that night itself.

You may not run away from someone who is wearing
clothes of the same color !
Disciple : So to consider some colors as auscipicious is wrong ?
Master : As wrong as calling some colors as inauspicious !
Disciple : I got it !

The lifestyle apparently changes for a Muni, from the time he started his contemplations. He may be found doing things which might amuze others attimes. He would drop his grip over his life and suddenly appear cool and care free. This might appear puzzling to many. Because when we see someone so happy and free, it is natual to suspect the backdrop of it. His contemplations brought upon him such a wisdom that he does not anguish about the distant future and perhaps cannot find time to discuss some meaningless past situations.

The proper and complete contemplations brings you to 'this' moment always. The 'this' moment is so fresh especially when untouched by the past and future moments, that only here 'this' moment your contemplative mind can reach its pinnacle. The peak of contemplations happen only when you have gathered yourself to here in 'this' moment, no matter where ever you are. People who have excelled in the art of contemplation, usually contemplate on the past and future too, but they will contemplate on them from the present moment's context. If you remembered that you were afraid of ghosts when you were in school, now you would contemplate and apply the knowledge to this moment, that there are actually no ghosts in this world, but only your mind creates them and give life to them. But a non contemplative mind can feel so stupid and idiotic about itself for making all those silly mistakes in the early days, even if they know now that the ghosts dont exist anymore in their present lives.

Disciple : But this peak of contemplation
you mentioned is what awakening too ?
Master : Its the beginning of awakening !
Disciple : Are there stages in awakening?
Master : Yes ! Just like you wake up from sleep.
You dont jump out of bed right away but go through
stages and till you stand under the shower, you
waking up cant be said to be complete !
Disciple : True !
Master : As how you dont know that you are sleeping,
when you are actually sleeping so also in spirituality
you never know you are sleeping and when awakening
happens you will go through several stages !
Disciple : Will there be glimpses of the
Cosnciousness during contemplations ?

Master : Yes, it can be called as satori or krama mukti. Flashes of Truth
seen during the contemplations are an indication of what is waiting !
Disciple : So there is no singular moment of awakening ?
Master : Not at all. But there is a single moment when you come
to be aware that you have woken up totally from sleep !
Disciple : So the enlightenment happens in stages but
awareness of that enlightenment happens at a singular moment ?
Master : Yes indeed. Like the first few droplets
falling from skies before the downpour of rain ! It may be raining for

long but you become aware of the rain at a particular time. That does not
mean it was not raining before !

" The man of steady contemplation does not
romanticize spirituality nor considers himself
to be special because he could contemplate "

(man of steady contemplation) part -2

People who lived in a fantasy world of their own, when turn to spirituality, start doing the same there too. They think spirituality is a whole new parallel world and enter with pomp and glory and lot of expectations for attention, like you enter a Italian restaurant in a Indian food court. Even if renounced, they would make a hue and cry about it and make every body take notice. They consider spirituality as a special stage in their lives. But these fantasies fall out moment their contemplations began. If their fantasies still have a stronghold, then contemplation can become a uphill task. Because the Truth is available only when all the fantasies of the mind end, however noble or great or stupid the fantasy is. Precisely speaking, the purpose of contemplations is to see life without a fanciful mind, to see the world as it is, to see it as One without a second, despite its apparent divisions.

Disciple : So what do I get if I contemplate on life ?
Master : Nothing !
Disciple : If I get only nothing, then what for I should contemplate ?
Master : Just to get Nothing

The result of a contemplative mind is not to have some new ideas or some fresh opinions on life but only to wipe out, whatever ideas and opinions you already have in your mind, which are prevalent since the sliced bread technology. But after contemplativeness of the mind, as if your mind is just born, fresh and uncorrupted all over again.

Disciple : Is it some kind of a new beginning ?
Master : You can say that !
Disciple : Will my life take a new course after that ?
Master : No more courses, because its
always going to be fresh and new !
Disciple : How is that? Please explain ?
Master : Only when you settled with some ideas,
the course of life begins. But when you are constantly
refreshing yourself, its always a new moment !
Disciple : But people will think I have no proper course of life ?
Master : Let them think so !
Disciple : But they create fear in me saying
I should have concrete ideas about life?
Master : It is their own fears of someone
challenging their concrete ideas !
Disciple : I need not bother even if it is my parents?
Master : Give them time. They will soon
identify your moment to moment fresh living as a 'course'
of life and they would want to be a part of it too !

The contemplative state of mind is not something like a drugged mind. It would not be imagining and dreaming or seeing para normally anything. A contemplator can never be a obstacle to any one's life. He simply is contemplative just about everything. Every little occasion in life provides him with enough material for contemplation.

Disciple : Is it not a monastery the safe
place for contemplation?
Master : Not so ! Monastery is not the
ideal place for contemplation !
Disciple : How come ?
Master : Because the life inside a monastery is
well planned and organized. The contemplative
possibilities are much lesser there. Its a everyday
grind without much change. Limited people around and
repeated situations all the time. But contemplations
need a constantly changing life scape.
Disciple : Then what is the purpose of the monasteries?
Master : They teach you how to contemplate. You just
learn the method of contemplation there, but cannot spend
the rest of your life inside the limiting walls of
any monastery or a place of worship.

The halls of wisdom inside any monastery is only to teach you how to look at life with a contemplative pair of eyes. Once learnt the knack, its time for you to test it out in the world of happenings, outside the protected precincts of a monastery. The muni always was part of the fleeting world. It offered him wide range of contemplative thoughts. While the regimen inside the monastery restricted him from exhaustive contemplations, outside he is overwhelmed with situations that keeps triggering his contemplations all the time.

Disciple : How does the world offer such situations ? Please Explain. I live in this world too, but I fail to see situations that can trigger contemplations in me !
Master : It could be any situation. Observe a baby smiling or crying, or simply trying to talk, watch the traffic on the road while sitting in the car, surfing the channels on TV, watching those various faces and try to relate to them as you pass by the channels, go through a sorrowful situation without avoiding it, reading a book from the middle, observe a part of your body in pain, turn off the movie before its climax, lying on the bed while the whole world outside goes frenzy, enjoying a sunny afternoon, cold shower on a winter morning, talking to a neighbor you never spoke before, drinking coffee from a cup that went cold, trying out a new dish in the kitchen, wake up in the dead of night and sit still, focus fully on the work at work place, visit a unknown restaurant or an old freind, travel by public transport even if you had a car, there are endless situations that can put you into contemplative mode in your everyday living.

To be a man of steady contemplation, any moment, anywhere, under any circumstances is quite fitting. In fact he is so contemplative about the most non significant occasions in life, that he could see presence of the Consciousness in his full awareness in all of them. Even in the earlier days, the munis who composed various contemplative texts, have lived in large families with many wives and children and a house hold to maintain. The demanding situations around them always brought the best contemplations from them rather than being isolated in a mysterious monastery in the seclusion of a mountain top.

Disciple : Can contemplations bring peace of mind?
Master : They remove all the distortions of the mind !
So it may appear like peace of mind !
Disciple : Can it remove stress from the mind?
Master : It would stretch the mind from
its narrowing ideas and views about life !
Disciple : Is that what I should expect from contemplations ?
Master : In fact you just contemplate without any expectations

The same situations which caused a lot of flutter in the mind, now in a contemplative mode, will appear so generous and full of benevolence. You will almost always end up laughing at a situation which left a lot of bitter taste in your mouth just a few days ago. When the man of steady contemplation speaks or writes from his contemplative mind, it appeals to others too. It seem to carry some divine touch which is simply an expression of the uncluttered mind.

Disciple : I'm already on a contemplative mode now !
Master : Then don't make an announcement of it !
Disciple : Which means others need not know I am contemplating?
Master : Even you need not know that you are contemplating

If you look at a lamp post standing quietly and lighting up the street, then you simply slip into contemplation how the lamp post is silent and how it is steady and how it does not compete with the neighboring lamp post, instead if you busy planning to contemplate on the lamp post on a fixed time and date and shout from the roof top about your future contemplative plans, then you have spoilt the chances of even a contemplation in your life.

Part -1

When you get settled in this exclusive contemplative state of mind, the vedic scriptures would declare you as the Muni, a man of contemplation. A man here is not just a man, but includes the woman too. Muni is a neuter gender. The world now spreads its canvas of life to this fully contemplative man, in a quite different light. Not that the world changed itself suddenly, like sudden darkness in winter evenings, but the man of contemplation is now viewing the world with an understanding, which is as clear as the high noon skies, on a bright summer day.

Just like how the wiper in the car wipes the glass and keeps the driver's vision of the road intact, during the dust or a rain storm, the mind of the contemplative man also keeps wiping his mind with contemplation all the time.

Disciple : Does it mean that the dust or rain
can still cloud the mind of the contemplator?
Master : Yes ! The dust of this world keeps covering the mind,
but the contemplator knows how to keep it wiped and clean.
you cannot stop the dust from falling !
Disciple : So this is not a advanced level of spirituality?
Master : This is where you begin to lose all the levels in your
spirituality and you come closer and closer to levellessness.
Disciple : Is that a spiritual progress ?
Master : Its a stage from where you neither progress nor regress !
Disciple : Is it the final destination ?
Master : Not really, but you start to realize at this point,
that you experience the destination in every moment of the journey !
Diciple : Please explain that?
Master : The man of contemplation experience every moment
so complete that he realizes the destination is not elsewhere
but right where he is !

The Muni is a established contemplator and not a fully awakened being. But he has reached a vital milestone in his quest for the true Self. His journey henceforth is as natural as the tropical rains in the amazonian jungles. No more austerities required and no more rules apply to him. He has crossed the preliminary stages of the spiritual path and as a result of a well established contemplative mind now he wastes no time in looking back or looking ahead, but is busy in anchoring himself in 'this' moment here, however critical or complementary the situation is.

Disciple : Does the world recognize
such a man of contemplation ?
Master : He is too busy in contemplation
that he does not bother to know about it !
Disciple : If the world recognized him,
will he respond to the world well ?
Master : Yes ! he still remains fit to live in the world,
as someone updated with the doldrums of the mundane !

The vedas were an expression of such men of contemplation. They were too busy in their contemplation that they forgot to leave their names behind as the authors, the reason why the authors of the upanishads are never known by any name. The upanishads are a author less wisdom. No one to claim the copyrights on upanishads.

Disciple : Upanishads and Vedas are
different from each other?
Master : They are same, Upanishads

appear at the end of the Vedas !
Disciple : So the Vedas are not the words of God ?
Master : They are words that happened

through the men of contemplation !
Disciple : God does not speak ?
Master : Yes, there is no need to speak !
Disciple : Can God speak ?
Master : Need not. But the question you

asked was possible because of God !
Disciple : God cannot contemplate ?
Master : There is no need for God to contemplate !

Contemplation is an exclusive possibility attributed to human beings only. The rest of creation do not contemplate on anything. The need is entirely human. It makes the human being somewhat 'superior' to other creatures and also makes him highly vulnerable and prone to suffer from angst and anguish.

Disciple : The contemplator can become
God as a result of contemplation ?
Master : Never ! But the contemplator

gets connected to God better !
Disciple : Can man ever become God ?
Master : Not at all ! he remains as man

only but whether he is connected to the
godliness within or not alone matters !

The contemplations you can do in your life simply helps you to get rooted within yourself, which is amounting to becoming aware of the unseen force within you, which caused your birth and the present life and eventually the death too. The man of contemplation does not enjoy any special privileges in life, except that he can derive his strength from within and does not depend anyone to sort out challenges in his life. He just shares his wisdom with the world and lives in a clarity about himself.

Disciple : Is the man of contemplation, a
man of enlightenment too ?
Master : He has come to close to that !
Now getting rooted in contemplative lifestyle
soon he would get established in the clarity
born out his contemplations too !
Disciple : How does one get established in contemplations ?
Master : By developing a contemplative mind !
Disciple : How is that done ?
Master : By not thinking just the way you have been
taught, but to think differently. By learning to look
at life from whole new standpoint.
Disciple : How should I ideally look at life,
if i need to contemplate on them ?
Master : Look around and TRY TO SEE THIS CREATION AS
YOUR OWN EXTENSION, just like your hands and legs extended
from your body !

(contemplation) Part-8

Contemplation can happen only to people, who can simply observe their thoughts without any participation. Like a bunch of kids playing a game, some shout, some jump, some very quiet, another highly vocal, yet another crying in a corner. You watch them all, but never become part of them. You may attend to them and pretend to be a part of them, but actually you will be carefully watching, if all the kids are doing fine and no one gets hurt while playing. That's why even the baby sitting at the day care center can be highly enlightening.

Disciple : So if I observe my thoughts well,
then I can contemplate well?
Master : Yes, because you are not the thought
itself, but the thoughtful person only.
disciple : What should I be contemplating
during the observation time ?
Master : Contemplate exactly on what
you observe, on your ability observe,
the quality of the thoughts, the duration
of a particular thought. you can contemplate on them all !
Disciple : Either I will go crazy or will go to sleep !
Master : Good ! Contemplate on how your thoughts put you to sleep !

The secret of a contemplative mind is that, it can deal with only what is happening to you now. You may even contemplate from your past, but it would be only in your present context. The plain thinking can scatter you in to the far and beyond, spanning your whole life, but the contemplation sustains you only to the present 'this' moment. The peaking of any contemplation eventually is to contemplate on the nature of this moment exclusively.

The pairs of polarity is the results of a regular thinking. Trying to be good or bad or avoiding the bad or good, but always wanting one polarity and ignoring the presence of other. Seeking only happiness, only success, only pleasure, only pride, only health, only riches and ignoring the existence of the other opposite side. This causes the split in the mind. But during contemplation you don't try to find a relief to pain, but you will be busy looking in to the origin of the pain, its relationship with you, its strength and weakness, your fears for the pain, your desperate attempts to alleviate pain, etc are the triggers for your contemplation.

Disciple : Does this contemplative mind question
the pain and its relationship with me etc?
Master : Never, the contemplative mind
never questions but simply explores !
Disciple : Please explain !
Master : The questioning is trying to deny
or avoid the existence of pain !
Disciple : So what is exploring ?
Master : To accept the existence of pain
and seeing it with the eyes wide open !

The only way you can iron out the wrinkles of your manifold split mind is to contemplate. Like a hot iron running through a wrinkled cloth smoothly even the fabric, without good and the bad parts, the mind too gets ironed out.

Disciple : As a result of contemplations,
I will be thinking only good thoughts?
Master : In fact you stop calling a thought as good !
Disciple : You mean I will have only bad thoughts?
Master : Instead you will realize that dividing
thought as good and bad is actually bad !
Disciple : Will I get oneness with God after that ?
Master : You will come to know that you have always been one !
Disciple : Will there be happy occasions in my life after that ?
Master : Every occasion become a cause to be happy then !
Disciple : All my problems will be solved ?
Master : Your problems get dissolved because
you dont recognize them as probelms anymore !
Disciple : Is it the end of my spiritual journey ?
Master : It is the beginning of the end of ignorance.
It is the beginning of seeing the light across the tunnel !

" When contemplations begin in your life,
it is a sign that you have just found the
bridge that connects the worldly life to
spiritual life "

(contemplations) Part-8

When you plainly think, then you will consider God as a separate entity, independent of this world, sitting far away from earth, inside a control tower, pushing buttons, plugging devices and turning knobs. If you slipped in the bathroom or got hurt in the elevator, then you imagine, it is the God who pulled certain strings for the day. But when matured from plain thinking to contemplation, you will now see God as an integral force, as not someone who causes the world to function, but the very function itself is God.

Disciple : Yes, this doubt always haunts me.
How to integrate my worldly life into the spiritual life ?
Master : Through contemplation only !
Disciple : So if i contemplate then I can

connect both these two different worlds?
Master : You need not connect because

they are already connected !
Disciple : Then what for contemplation ?
Master : For you to become aware that they

are always One and not separate !
Disciple : How it got separated ?
Master : Never it got separated.

Just you thought so !

By thinking you can divide and by contemplation you can unite. Though there is no division or union required in creation, the mind does all the dividing and then fixing back. The famous Hindu scripture Bhagawad Gita talks of how the mind alone is the cause for bondage and also the cause for freedom. When it is just brooding and thinking hard, the mind causes bondage and when it enters the contemplative mode, then there is a sudden clarity of oneness and as a result the freedom from other.

Disciple : Are you sure I will not become useless
in the world, if i start contemplating?
Master : Yes ! In fact thinking that way alone is useless !
Disciple : My wife is terribly worried about my spiritual life !
Master : Wives are meant for worrying about husbands only !
So you don't worry about that ! She will soon know who you are !

The biggest farce in life is to think that you have two different paths to choose, called as worldly path and spiritual path. This kind of divisive thinking comes from a divided mind. They always consider spirituality as a goal and the worldly life as the journey. So when someone died, they call the priests and do all funny rituals to send off the body to the spiritual world to rest and relax. To them death or nearing death is the ideal time to get spiritual. There are still some who switch over to spiritual path in the middle of their worldly life. One not so fine morning, unable to deal with the challenging world anymore, they quit the job and family and other responsibilities and take a 'full plunge' in to spiritual life. Its a pathetic sign of a divided mind.

Disciple : Even I had plans to become fully
spiritual when i reached the age of 60 !
Master : Till then what was your plan ?
Disciple : To be totally worldly,

to complete all my duties !
Master : Now what happened ?
Disciple : Now i started to realize that

spirituality is a way of living and not a
separate lifestyle !
Master : Bravo !

Contemplation is a blending force, that brings clarity to your mind. You begin to grow in awareness of your own self in that clarity. 'Who you are' and 'what you search for' finally meets in your contemplation. The unwanted frills that you put on without a warrant, in the name of spirituality is all cropped neat and clean. Suddenly you will be getting up from the right side of your bed each day in the morning. You may bump into a hundred lunatics in the day, but you still remain with sanity.

Disciple : But when I'm disturbed, how can I contemplate ?
Master : You can contemplate on the disturbance itself !
Disciple : If others disturb me ?
Master : Contemplate on that too !

(A little later)

Disciple : But please tell, what posture
I should sit for contemplation?
Master : Well, which posture
you usually get the thoughts?
Disciple : I get thoughts in all the postures !
Master : Then you must try to contemplate
while being in all those postures !

(A little later)

Disciple : Which is the ideal time to contemplate ?
Master : Which are the times you usually get thoughts?
Disciple : All the time, i guess even when i sleep !
Master : Then you have to contemplate all the

time, even in your sleep !

(A little later)

Disciple : How many times I should repeat this in a day ?
Master : As many times you get the thoughts in your head !
Disciple : How long I should contemplate in one sitting?
Because if I sit for long I get pain in the joints, so Im asking !
Master : Then please contemplate on the pain in your joints !
Disciple : How is that ?
Master : Contemplate on how this pain creates
fear in you. How you question only when there
is pain and you never question the pleasure
and the joys of your life. How you seem to
want only pleasure and not some pain. More
importantly now contemplate on the fact that
you never thought about your knees till it
started paining. Just about any situation will do.
Disciple : I got it. You are saying contemplation is
not an activity but a integral part of my thinking.
Just a shift in my thinking? An ongoing process all the time?
Master : Unfortunately I don't carry a mirror to
show how your face is glowing now !
Disciple : You are my mirror, you always showed me what Iam !

You don't need a special situation or a place or time or even some special exclusive vows to contemplate. It can happen any time. And once set on the expressway of the contemplation, indeed it would be difficult to stop anywhere.
